Tooniversary: Scooby-Doo meets Josie & The Pussycats (1973)

I had long wondered how Josie & The Pussycats could manage to join forces with Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. team on a case when they were traveling through space on their own show. Well, the answer is that this adventure took place during season 2 of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, which proved that the band did manage to come home, but we don't know if this actually took place before or after their space trip.

"The Haunted Showboat" has the two groups trying to stop some counterfeiters. Plenty of work for Casey Kasem (Shaggy & Alex Cabot), who also voices one of the villains, and Don Messick (Scooby & Sebastian), as per usual.

Edit, 9/4/2020: The original video has been deleted. In its place is a brief excerpt.

Again, the animation and slower pace drag this one down. Both groups have seen better times.

Rating: B-.

This used to be one of those crossovers every kid would have hoped for back in the day. Too bad it fell short of expectsations.

It just didn't feel like all the characters personalities were used to their potential. Pairing shaggy & Alex was a mistake since they essentially cancelled each other out.

You just have the feeling of this really big crowd trying to get through the adventure without tripping over one another.

Not to mention Josie & the gang usually dealt with bond level villans trying to take over the world - this adventure would have been a cakewalk in comparison!

As for the outer space adventures, I prefer to belove it was all a bad dream of Sebastian's after having eaten a can of bad tuna!

Don't we all wish that were true.

This was one of those deals that actually should've been a 2-part adventure with a cliffhanger, but they were still in done-in-one mode back then. Meh.

It's been something of a mystery to me for several years...exactly which episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies features the scene of Fred, Velma, and Daphne paddling down what appears to be an underground river. The scene appears in the opening credits. Daphne's wearing a big purple ball gown.

That would be the episode with Sandy Duncan, I believe.
