Saturday Morning's Forgotten Heroes: Space Ghost vs. Eclipse Woman (1981)

From Space Stars:

This time, Space Ghost (Gary Owens) battles a 1-shot foe, Eclipse Woman, who steals energy from other planets for her own selfish ends. Teen Force's Kid Comet makes a guest appearance.

I have to take issue with Jace's comment about men being better at space patrol. In this story, Jan's on a date with Kid Comet, and Jace takes advantage with his condescending remarks. However, over on Super Friends, if the writers gave this same line to Zan, his sister Jayna would have plenty to say about that, since she's never far away. Therein lies the difference between our two sets of spacey siblings. They never gave a thought back then to finding Jayna a boyfriend, although at the time Robin could've filled the bill. Meanwhile, the cancellation of Space Stars left Jan & Comet's story unfinished. Oh, what might've been had the show been renewed instead........

Rating: B.

Back then I had noticed this and a few other, shows seethed with pseudo feminism. Upon rewatch, Jan is reworked into a feminist who thinks women can do anything a man can do, while Jace suddenly becomes an ignorant chauvinist pig. These were not the characters I fell in love with! If the writers cared more (or perhaps the suits they served had) it would have been far more fair and realistic to have had the twins quibble from time to time but still have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I always liked the coupling of Jan and Kid Comet - I hope should a reboot of SG ever come to pass, that it makes its way into it!

As for Jayna & Robin - maybe. He did have an eye for alien chicks after all!

I couldn't help but feel that Robin wasn't often seen as "the kid" in other SF adventures especially when you consider he was about the same age as other teen sidekicks. Wendy & Marvin were only about 2-3 years younger than he was (approximating since they couldn't drive yet - so say aged 14), and we know Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond) was about 18.

I think when SF started, Robin, who was in college in the books, was at least 18, which would make Wendy & Marvin 14-15.

When the Wonder Twins came along 4 years later, one can assume that they were the same age as Wendy & Marvin, but were a little more pro-active. Indeed, the writers blew chance after chance at creating hookups for Jayna, first with Robin, as we've both noted, and, later, with Ronnie Raymond, 1/2 of Firestorm, who instead was hung up on Wonder Woman for some reason, same as Darkseid.

What fools these mortal writers be!
