You Know the Voice: John Stephenson (1965)

Welcome back to season 1 of Hogan's Heroes, and a guest appearance by today's subject, John Stephenson.

John appeared in a variety of roles, mostly as German officers, during the series' run, and also did some voice-over work as an Underground agent working on a sub that sometimes gave Colonel Hogan (Bob Crane) coded instructions for missions. Here, John plays a German officer who has a truck filled with heavy water being stored at Stalag 13.

Werner Klemperer (Klink) and Richard Dawson (Newkirk) would later give voice work a go, both working for Hanna-Barbera in the intervening years. In Dawson's case, he did a few jobs before reinventing himself as a game show icon.

Loved hearing Stephenson's voice over the years. Hearing it is like hearing the voice from one's real life past.

One of the last VA roles I heard was for Duck Dodgers. In the episode, DD got his uniform mixed up with that on Hal Jordan. Naturally he gets transported to Oa and hilarity ensued. When one of the Guardians spoke, I had to do a double take! I realized it was indeed John Stephenson doing the voice! Someone must have called in a massive favor to make that happen!

Was it ever settled that he hadn't died and his obit was a hoax? I remember it was quite an uproar on TZ.

It was in fact a hoax. I had to do some editing on the entry I wrote at the time. John is retired, that's all.
